THE TRUE COST OF COAL
ELEV PITCH – “Coal Keeps the Lights On” – but at what cost? In 2008, we traveled to central Appalachia to meet with communities fighting to stop mountaintop removal, an extreme form of coal mining that blasts ancient mountains into toxic moonscapes. This graphic is a multi-tool for understanding the big picture, how we’re all part of the system that demands coal as fuel, and how we can change it.
the STORY OF THE TRUE COST OF COAL GRAPHICS CAMPAIGN
In 2008, the Beehive allied with Appalachian grassroots organizers fighting mountaintop removal coal mining, a highly destructive practice that blasts ancient mountains into toxic moonscapes to fuel the ever-growing global demand for electricity. After more than two years of on-the-ground research, story-sharing, metaphor crafting, and meticulous drawing, including collaboration with hundreds of grassroots groups and folks from around the world, we released the True Cost of Coal graphics campaign in 2010.
This graphics campaign reflects the complexity of the struggles for land, livelihood, and self-determination playing out in Appalachia, and was made with the intention of honoring the tremendous history of organized resistance and the courage of communities living in the shadow of Big Coal.
The Appalachian mountains are where the most biodiverse temperate forests in the world are found, and this graphic is teeming with bio-regionally accurate plant and animal species that are both ecologically and culturally significant to Appalachia. A full cast of characters by their common names is available in the narrative.
This visually stunning graphic serves as a multi-tool for activists and other folks seeking real solutions to energy extraction and climate change. We are all impacted by coal, and we all play a part in the system that demands coal as fuel. Half the electricity in the U.S. today still comes from burning coal, the dirtiest energy source on the planet. Mountaintop removal is a human and ecological drama wreaking havoc on coalfield communities, folks downwind and downstream of coal-burning power plants, and all of us faced with catastrophic climate change. The True Cost of Coal graphics campaign is helping more people share stories, find their place in the big picture, and take action to build a just and ecologically sound future.
HOW TO USE THIS POSTER

This graphic is a folding poster inspired by the back cover of Mad Magazine (yes, really!). The closed poster depicts an intact mountain landscape, bursting with biodiversity, clean water, and interconnectedness. We see the Appalachian Mountains from the ground up, from the point of view of those who live there. When the poster is pulled apart, a very different landscape is revealed – one of exploitation and extraction, of toxic contamination and privatization of resources.
Opening the poster literally splits apart the mountain range, and the first image you see is of a mountaintop removal site, where explosives are blasting the mountain, and a dragline is symbolically scooping away a whole community in its enormous bucket. The bigger story unfolds chronologically from left to right, tracing the epic history of coal in a series of five chapters. Along the bottom of the poster are stories from Appalachia. As you move up in the image to the top of the poster, the stories become national and global in scope.

Verdadero Coste del Carbón
La historia de la campaña gráfica “El Verdadero Coste del Carbón”
En 2008, la Colmena se alió con personas organizadoras de resistencia social contra la minería de extracción de cimas de montaña (MCEM), una práctica altamente destructiva que destruye antiguas montañas y las convierte en paisajes lunares tóxicos para alimentar la siempre creciente demanda global de electricidad. Tras más de dos años de trabajo de campo, compartir historias, elaboración de metáforas y dibujo meticuloso, incluyendo la colaboración con cientos de grupos sociales de base y gente de todo el mundo, lanzamos la campaña “El Verdadero Coste del Carbón” en 2010.
Esta campaña gráfica refleja la complejidad de las luchas por la tierra, la subsistencia y la autodeterminación que está teniendo lugar en Appalachia, y se hizo con intención de honorar la trmenda historia de resistencia organizada y el coraje de comunidades viviendo en la sombra del Gran Carbón.
Los montes Appalachias son el lugar donde se encuentran los bosques templados más biodiversos del mundo, y está plagado de especies animales y vegetales biorregionalmente específicas que son significantes tanto ecológica como culturalmente a la región de Appalachia. Un elenco entero de personajes y su nomenclatura común pueden encontrarse en la narrativa.
Este gráfico de alta potencia visual sirve como una herramienta multiusos para activistas y gente que busca soluciones reales a la extracción energética y el cámbio climático. El carbón nos impacta a todos y todas y nosotras y nosotros jugamos nuestro papel en un sistema que exige carbón como combustible. Hoy en día la mitad de la electricidad de los EEUU proviene aún de la quema de carbón, el recurso energético más sucio del planeta. La MECM es un drama humano y ecológico que causa estragos en las comunidades de los yacimientos, y que nos afecta a todos y todas, incluso a la gente que fluye con la industria de las plantas incineradoras ya que es un instigador del cambio climático. La campaña gráfica sobre el Verdadero Coste del Carbón está ayudando a más y más gente a compartir historias, encontrar su lugar en un escenario global y tomar acción para construir un futuro justo y ecológicamente seguro.

Cómo usar este Póster
Este gráfico es un póster plegable inspirado por la contraportada de la revista “Mad” (sí, en serio!). El póster cerrado representa un paisaje montañoso intacto, abarrotado de biodiversidad, agua limpia y interconectividad. Vemos los Montes Apalaches desde el suelo y hacia arriba, desde el punto de vista de aquellas personas que allí viven. Cuando el póster se despliega, un paisaje muy diferente se revela – un paisaje de explotación y estracción, de contaminación tóxica y privatización de recursos.
Abrir el póster literalmente abre en canal la cordillera, y la primera imagen que se ve es una zona minera donde están reventando la montaña con explosivos y una excavadora de arrastre está simbólicamente sacando una comunidad entera a cucharadas con su enorme pala. La historia mayor se despliega cronológicamente de izquierda a derecha, rastreando la épica historia del carbón en una serie de cinco capítulos. A lo largo de la base del póster están las historias de los Apalaches. A medida que la vista se aleja hacia la parte superior, las historias toman un alcance nacional y global.
